ARCHITECTURAL PROGRAM

Gymnasium and Athletic Fields Building Program

Vision:

To develop an architectural program for an athletic complex with gymnasium and outdoor activity fields for St John's College.

History:

In 1890, Fredrick Bourne purchased approximately 400‐acres adjacent to the Great South Bay for an estate. Ernest M. Flagg, a noted architect, designed Indian Neck Hall for the Bourne residence. The hall was completed in 1900.

The estate was purchased by the Christian Brothers religious order in 1926, and repurposed the estate for educational use. The LaSalle Military Academy was established, and evolved into a general private school. It closed in 2001, and St. John’s University purchased the campus to conduct graduate programs and conferences.

In 2015, the property was sold to an non‐profit educational institution. As part of the sale, the new owners obtained a zoning change (Planned Land Preservation overlay) to permit the development of the campus ‐ the construction of market‐ rate housing, and preservation of wetland areas and retention of the traditional educational core of the property.

Goal:

Your team has been hired to develop an architectural program for the complex. The site and buildings have been purchased by a non‐profit educational institution, who will utilize the site to establish Oakdale College. Deliverables:

  • Develop an architectural program for the educational facilities in the proposed district. Your group will identify all aspects of the building program, including rooms and other amenities required to support the core functions of an athletic facility and outdoor fields.

  • Evidence must be presented that the components and attributes of the program follow generally accepted standards based on research of similar facilities that your team has identified from authoritative sources.

  • Using cost factors/data presented by the owner’s representative, prepare a preliminary cost projection for the program with factors for building site development & contingencies.

  • Present your conclusions in a written report in a format to be determined by the Owner’s Representative and a Power Point presentation to an assembled panel of experts from the local architectural community.

Ending Quote

In order to design a building the first thing architects need to understand is the program, which is an architectural way of saying, “what is your wish list?” or, “how will this building be used?”
